Who’s attending the debate tonight?

Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis will be attending the Iowa Republican Primary debate. Haley is a politician and diplomat who served as the governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017, and as the 29th United States ambassador to the United States from 2017 to 2018. Haley, whose full name is Nimarata Nikki Haley (née Randhawa), is also the first Indian American to serve in a presidential cabinet. She announced her presidential campaign in February 2023. “I was the proud daughter of Indian immigrants — not Black, not white. I was different,” she said in a campaign video posted on Twitter. The video was titled “Strong & Proud” and opened with photos of her family. She continued, “Some look at our past as evidence that America’s founding principles are bad. They say the promise of freedom is just made up. Some think our ideas are not just wrong, but racist and evil. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

She went on in the video, “Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections, that has to change … It’s time for a new generation of leadership.”

DeSantis, for his part, is a politician and 46th governor of Florida, a role he’s served since 2019. He also represented Florida’s 6th congressional district in the House of Representatives from 2023 to 2018. He announced his presidential campaign in May 2023.”I’m running for president to lead our Great American Comeback,” he tweeted, along with his campaign video.

“Righting the ship requires restoring sanity to our society, normalcy to our communities and integrity to our institutions. Truth must be our foundation — and common sense can no longer be an uncommon virtue. In Florida, we proved that it can be done,” DeSantis said in the video. “We chose facts over fear, education over indoctrination, law and order over rioting and disorder. We held the line when freedom hung in the balance.”
