He’d been battling another injury just a few weeks before the Super Bowl, but 49ers fans were devastated when Deebo Samuel’s injury took him into the blue tent on February 11, 2024, in the big game agains the Kansas City Chiefs.
Born on January 15, 1996, Samuel was selected by the 49ers in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft and quickly gained recognition for his versatile skill set and ability to make big plays both as a receiver and a runner.
In late January 2024 ahead of the NFC Championship, Samuel avoided a fractured shoulder when he went down during the second drive during the team’s 24-21 divisional-round win over the Green Bay Packers. “It wasn’t broken, so that was a really good sign,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said at the time.
“It’s still hurting too much for us to have any idea on how it’s going to heal up this week. We have to be patient, see how he feels on Wednesday and based on his improvement it will give us a better idea whether he has a chance for the game or not.”
He was a crucial part of the 49ers offense with 892 yards and 7 touchdowns so when it came to Super Bowl LVIII, the news of Deebo Samuel’s injury could’ve spelt disaster for the 49ers hopes of a championship.
Deebo Samuel injury
Deebo Samuel’s injury happened in the third quarter after he’d already been targeted 7 times. It looked to be a hamstring injury and he left the field listed as questionable to return, however in a good sign he was able to walk off the field himself and into the blue medical tent.
But moment later, Samuel emerged and returned to the field. While the Chiefs were down at the time of Samuel’s injury, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the king of the comeback so the 49ers hopes at a Super Bowl victory with baby Brock Purdy remain to be seen.
We’ll continue to update this story as new information emerges.
