The Best Extensions For Thin Hair

Finding the best hair extensions for thin hair can be a struggle for those of us with breakage-prone, damaged, and fine hair. We already have less hair to hide pesky clips and the thought of losing any of our natural strands simply isn’t an option.
As someone who’s always struggled with thin hair, it’s been increasingly difficult to find good hair extensions for thin hair that don’t look fake or cause breakage.
The problem is…
Many extensions aim to give you length, but don’t address the real needs of thin hair types: damage-free installation, zero peak-through, and the need for natural looking fullness.
If you have breakage caused by heat styling, postpartum thinning, or just naturally have thinner locks, there are a few things I’ve learned to be non-negotiables when it comes to hair extensions.
Read on to discover my top five tips to find hair extensions that care for your hair as much as you do.

What Makes the Best Extensions for Thin Hair?
If you have thin hair like me, you’re likely painfully aware of what it needs most: fullness. And in that quest, you’ve likely sacrificed something that’s even more important: preserving its health.
Teasing hair, heated styling tools, and using traditional hair extensions are touted as the key volume builders for us thin hair’d girls, but they make our situation so much worse; causing breakage to the little hair we already have.
After years of experience with clip ins, tapes, and the occasional weave, my hair is thinner than ever.
This is why I now look for extensions that knock off as many of my non-negotiables as possible.
Are Hair Extensions Bad For Thin Hair?
When you wear hair extensions that are specially made for the needs of thin hair, then no! But shockingly, not all hair extensions are created for this.
Hair extensions that are bad for thin hair are those that claim to be a one-size-fits-all solution, or even worse, aren’t concerned with their thin haired users at all!
They’re results driven, sure, but you’ll often find them peaking through, or worse, damaging your hair in the long run.
How to Use Hair Extensions For Thin Hair
There’s no hard and fast rules for wearing them if you choose good extensions for thin hair, but there are some guidelines I’d suggest with ANY hair extension type for finer hair types.

Be Gentle: Always brush from the bottom of the hair and work your way up when wearing any hair extensions.

Brush Often: Better yet, carry a small tangle taming brush! You can lightly brush on the go, loosening small knots before they turn big is crucial for preventing breakage-causing tangles.

Wear a Heat Protectant: This goes for anyone and everyone. If you care about your extensions or even your own hair surviving styling, you MUST use a heat protectant.

Incorporate Silk Into Your Routine: Prolong your hair extension’s health (and your own hair!) with soft silk scrunchies that don’t snag on strands.

Good extensions for thin hair are a solution, not a cause of thin hair. Steer clear of any hair extensions that rely on clips, tapes, or glues to attach to your hair. These attach weight right at the root causing both immediate and long term damage where it matters most.
The best hair extensions for fine and thin hair are ones that are able to sit on top of the hair as opposed to latching onto your strands for dear life.
All extensions will add weight of course, and a clip here and there is OK, but you don’t want weak strands to be bearing all the weight.
Instead, look for non-attaching hair extensions like halos where an invisible wire sits within your roots and not directly to them!

Extensions That You Can Hide Within Your Natural Hair
If you have thin hair, it’s important to get extensions that will blend well with your natural hair’s density. Trying to make thin hair look thick with non-graded hair extensions can not only damage your hair, but it can also just look unnatural.
When hair extension thickness isn’t “graded”, it means you get the same thickness from end to end which will inevitably get you way more “oh, she’s wearing her extensions today” than “I wonder why her hair looks so good”.
This is where clips get pesky again as well: even if you choose a thinner weight in a clip in hair extension, you’ll have to account for the thickness of the clips!
This is what makes extensions like halos one of the best hair extensions for fine thin hair—they only use an invisibly-thin fishing wire to hold the weft, not a clunky metal piece.
See how easy they can be for hiding within your natural hair!

Real, ProGrade Remy Hair Extensions
You already care for your own hair’s health, so make sure your hair extensions are on the same mission. Thin hair usually needs a bit more work in the styling department to get more volume, which means you’ll be heat styling your hair extensions just as often too!
The best hair extensions for thin hair styling are those patented with 100% human, ProGrade Remy hair. This means they can withstand heat like your natural hair (with a heat protectant of course), they’ll remain soft after washing and wearing, and they won’t frizz like synthetic hair.

Extensions That Thicken, Not Just Lengthen
Hair extensions do just that: extend your hair. But for thin hair, what we often need more of is density, fullness, and gap coverage. For the most natural-looking results, we root for volumised ends that make hair look healthier! When Using Your Extensions Every DayA finer weight of extension (one that has less grams of hair) will be less heavy and give you a super natural fullness to ends. These weights may be the best extensions for very thin hair too as they act more like a supplement to thin hair; giving you realistic length and density. Want a little bit more?Very thin hair can still use a medium or mid-level thickness for everyday if you want thicker hair or you’re starting off with fine, not thin thin, hair. When Using Extensions For Special OccasionsIf you want a good hair extension for thin hair that gets you volume AND length, grab a thicker weight in a halo hair extension. These have more wefts of hair and are much fuller throughout while still being graded and natural looking.
Wear them for more special occasions or if you love lusciously thick hair every day, these are still great for werking the 9-5!
