A touching first outing. King Charles’ latest cancer update includes visiting fellow cancer patients and further going into treatment. The monarch made his first public appearance while also having a very personal connection with citizens.
On April 26, 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles would make his first public outing after his cancer diagnosis. “His Majesty The King will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis,” read a statement at the time. “To help mark this milestone, The King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment center next Tuesday, where they will meet medical specialists and patients.” King Charles’ first outing with his wife Camilla stressed the importance of early cancer detection and learn more about the innovative research happening at the hospital supported by Cancer Research U.K.
In the statement, Charles’ medical team is very “encouraged by the progress” he has made and they all “remain positive” about his recovery. “Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimize any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery,” the statement continued. “The pacing of the King’s program will be carefully calibrated as his recovery continues, in close consultation with his medical team.”

ITV reporter Chris Shipp reported that the King was happily talking to fellow cancer patients during his visit. “King Charles told cancer patients that he was going for his own treatment this afternoon,” he tweeted. “Many patients said afterwards they felt a personal connection with him as he understands what they had been through and are still going through.”
When he was engaging with patients, he told a cancer patient Lesley Woodbridge, “It’s always a bit of shock when they tell you,” according to Rebecca English of the Daily Mail.
David Probert, chief executive of University College Hospital London said that the monarch was “engaged positively and, as always, was incredibly enthusiastic with the staff.”
“It was a wonderful atmosphere. The energy was high,” he told People .”Their Majesties were full of enthusiasm and engaging with the patients and most importantly for our staff.” He added that the King was “incredibly knowledgeable, and every time I speak to him, I learn something new about cancer.”
He continued, “It meant a huge amount to our staff. This has been an incredibly difficult few years for the NHS [National Health Service]. We’ve just come off the back of COVID and we care for many patients with cancer, it’s one of the biggest areas for us, and for the King and Queen to choose to come here was incredibly uplifting.”
The King received gifts from received flowers from Della Thomas, 6, and Ellis Edwards, 11, and the monarch also gave them gifts in return such as books and a chocolate treat.
Buckingham Palace announced on February 5, 2024. that doctors discovered that King Charles had “a form of cancer” following additional tests. “His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” the palace shared in a statement on February 5, 2024. “Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”
The statement continued: “The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible. His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
