J Cat Beauty 2 In 1 Piece Of Cake Blush + Highlighter is on sale this week at ulta.com for $6 each and I thought I’d do a mini review with swatches for those curious about the formula. I have the biggest love-hate relationship with this formula. I needed a safe place where I could rant and rave about it. And what better place to do so than here with a bunch of friends I love and trust? Remember how Sammy sang about fifty thousand watts of power? Pretty sure he was singing about this highlighter in this duo. It’s blinding. I’m positive it has at least fifty thousand watts of power to make it this bright, shiny, and shimmery.
J Cat Beauty is one my guilty beauty budget pleasures. They always have super inexpensive makeup items that I end up loving all over. J Cat Beauty 2 In 1 Piece Of Cake Blush + Highlighter was released a few months ago and it was impossible to find in stock at Ulta. It just kept selling out! I finally got my hands on the shade One in a Melon and boy, has it been an adventure.
This comes in a dual-compartment compact much like Kaja Beauty Bento Bouncy Eyeshadow Trios. It has two compartments with a blush that’s 0.22 oz in size and a highlighter that’s a bit smaller at 0.2 oz. They normally retail for $9 bucks but with the current sale they’ll set you back $6 bucks.
I have the worst relationship ever with this formula though! Some part of me is like oh my god yes go grab one and another part of me like DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER! They are a pain to apply and blend out but if you take the time to do so you’ll be kind of shocked with the results.
I got the shade One in a Melon and the blush shade is is a bright berry red. I’m talking loud, harsh, clown cheek berry red! It’s not bad enough the color is so bold but the fact it’s matte makes it an even bigger challenge to apply and blend out. It has an almost creamy consistency but isn’t powdery but has a more dense, firm texture that runs drier. It applies patchy as hell if you’re using it by itself. However, if you dip your brush into the powder and do the same with the highlighter and back to the blush and dap off the excess you have a fighting chance of applying this without it looking patchy and uneven. But trust me, you still have to blend, blend, blend, blend to get it look perfect. And if you don’t have a perfectly smooth surface to work on you’re going to find it looks even more patchy. I make sure I hydrate really well and apply a good sticky or hydrating primer before I even attempt application of this blush.
J Cat Beauty 2 In 1 Piece Of Cake Blush + Highlighter (Swatch of Shades Blended Together, Swatch of Blush, Swatch of Highlighter)
The highlighter is a softer formula than the blush and almost appears frosty in the pan but contains a good deal of fine silver shimmer. It’s powdery in consistency and looks a bit frosty but as you blend it creates the most blinding glow on your skin! There is shimmer so be warned but it’s very pretty if you take the time to blend it out well. The color is a strawberry pink with silver.
Did I mention this stuff wears like a champion? I get like a 150 hours glow and color from this. Not really, but it was crazy humid last week and I wore it out Saturday and go through the morning, day, and late into the evening with my blush/highlighter blinding everyone around me.
Is it a pain to apply? Hells yes! Did I give it a somewhat poor review review? Yup! But is it worth the effort? Yeah, it sort of is! It has issues but with a little TLC you can get a nice look from this duo! Has anyone tried these? Do share your thoughts on it!
