Dua Lipa is currently in her Radical Optimism era, which means that the red hair she’s been rocking since before the album came out will likely be the look she carries throughout the era. Well, that seems to be the formula all pop stars are running with these days: an album cycle is an era, and an era requires one continuous look. But then this morning, my editor told me that she didn’t really agree with everyone calling Dua Lipa’s hair “cola red” when it’s very clearly purple. So that’s the investigation: is Dua Lipa’s hair purple?
Full disclosure, I’ve never colored my hair, so I don’t know the last thing about the process and nuance of what can be done to hair color. I don’t even know if that last sentence is the correct way to talk about hair color. But my editor, Lindsey insists there is something different. I’m not quite seeing it, but let’s look at the evidence.
So the above photo is the one that got us talking, and it does kind of look like it’s been toned purple. Like maybe it’s grape soda instead of cola red. I don’t know. It’s hard to know because of the lighting, tbh. For reference, the photo below is her hair in March, where it’s pretty definitely and clearly not purple.
It’s all too much. I have no idea. Lindsey says that when her hair was bleached, her stylist gave her different color variations without coloring it with dye, instead just toning it to give her lavender or silver. So maybe that’s what’s going on here. I truly still think it might just be red. But we need the audience to weigh in on this one. Is it still red and just the dark lighting? Is our girl tinting it to purple? Is there really that much of a difference between maroon and burgundy?
